Construction’s Checklist: Canters (check), Crosses Creeks (check), Coups (check) and Carrots (check, check, check….)

“Gus” (Construction) is so incredibly happy with his new career and new home at Bits & Bytes Farm. His personality comes out more and more everyday and I absolutely adore him.

He has recently perfected the art of rolling (every single inch of his body gets covered with dust) and decided he has a LOVE for carrots. He started nickering when I walk to his stall (he also nickers at Richard!), which is so amazing to hear. We are still working on meeting halfway in the pasture, as he would much rather hang out with his two pasture buds eating grass and hay! He has filled out beautifully and I noticed last week that he has some dapples on his rear!

Our riding is going great as well. The very first time we went for a trail ride in the woods he crossed the creek! It was quite a leap, but we made it over! I try to go into the woods as much as I can, so by the end of our second week he was walking through the water rather than leaping over it.

We started canter work, still doing lots and lots of trot work, he is learning to lunge without pulling me across the arena, and we have even jumped small cross rails, a small coup and logs in the woods!

I hope to have many, many more updates and some good pictures to come!

Elizabeth’s Note: Melissa Hopkins found Leaderboard and her former sorority sister on the Bits & Bytes Farm Prospect Horses For Sale page. We mentioned that Leaderboard was as quiet as Construction and when Melissa followed the link to Construction’s information she found Meredeth. It seems like Melissa and Meredeth have the same taste in horses: big, beautiful, quiet, chestnut Thoroughbred geldings.

Construction (we call him “Gus”) arrived at Bits & Bytes Farm on Monday, August 11th. The nearly 30 hour journey to Georgia did not seem to upset him at all. He walked from the road to the barn without any trouble, and he even stopped to munch on some grass. We took the first few days to bond over grooming and bath time, lots of apples (his favorite – he doesn’t care for carrots), photo sessions and walks. He is an absolute sweetheart with a very sensible head, not to mention that he is gorgeous! Nothing seems to bother him. He stood quietly for a bath and for the farrier, and did not have any trouble being turned out with his two new pasture buddies.

We had our first ride today and it was great! There were three other horses in the ring, but again, he wasn’t bothered. We kept the workout very easy, only walking and trotting.

I am very much looking forward to our time together. I think he is going to be an amazing horse – I see so much potential in him already. Thanks to Becky for her excellent eye and thanks to you, Elizabeth, for all of your help and continued support!

This was his Prospect Horse FOR SALE information:

Construction is a 2004, 16 hh, chestnut gelding. Clean legged with no vices. He is naturally shod right now and has great feet. He has been trail ridden lightly in a western saddle. He naturally goes with his head level with his withers. My contact body clipped this horse last winter and he never moved. He is a super kind horse with not a mean bone in his body. He will be sold with no papers though. His owners do not want him to race again. He is just a neat horse who would look great in the hunter ring and will make the transition with no issues since he has already been ridden off-the-track in a western saddle.
