OTTB’s Set New Standards for Equine Obstacle Course

Icy Event is doing much better – putting on weight.  He is so good-natured and appreciative.

While we don’t have any new photos of Icy Event, we have fun photos to share of “Dudley” aka Josh, one of the 25 Special Horses and Coinmaker.

Just wanted to let you know that Georgia had her first ride on Icy last Friday. She had not ridden in a while because of the situation with her previous horses, so she was a little nervous. He was so great! We just put the saddle and bridle on and she got on. He was perfectly calm and sweet. I got to ride him too, and he was really nice.

He is getting along with all the horses and dogs now – just part of the gang.

There are even more great photos of Icy Event and Georgia taken during their first ride at Icy Event’s photo gallery.

Breaking the “Icy” with Mares is Tough

Another story for you…Icy is getting along fine and does well with Coin, Dudley and the Appys. I think there is a consortium of mares (led by Leslie’s big chestnut Thoroughbred) to keep him from really getting into the herd yet. I found him down in the stall (our barn has a section of wash rack to stall to paddock) with a “where are those mean girls?” look on his face. It’s so funny. His not being very dominant is good for us humans in being around him. I think he is right up there with Coin for being really sweet.

Pulling Shoes No Biggie for “Icy”

Just wanted to brag about Icy again. Yesterday we did a little round pen stuff, and he was very calm. I also pulled one of his front shoes since he lost the other one in the pasture. It takes me a lot longer to pull a shoe than it does for the farrier to do it, and he just stood there very patiently. I also did the Reducine and put sugar/iodine (not water!) on a couple of little scrapes. He didn’t bat an eye at anything and didn’t fidget or worry at all. I can’t believe what was going to happen to him (had he not found a new home) – he’s obviously a great horse.

Elizabeth’s Note: An old horseman’s trick to treat a wound is to make a paste of sugar and iodine. It will harden and protect the wound. Disclaimer: we are not vets and you should consult your vet before giving any treatment for a serious injury.

Icy Event – New Home, New Friends, New “Freedoms”

Icy spent the night in the stall and cleaned up every bite of hay. I put him back in the same pasture this morning and put Coin in with him. They said hello and started eating grass like they’d been best friends forever. It was so nice. Thanks for helping get him to us (and for helping all those other horses, too).

Later in the afternoon – another update on Icy:

When I got home, I didn’t see Icy and Coin in the pasture, and when I got farther down the driveway I saw why. Apparently, the horses staged a “free Icy” campaign and popped the electric fence off its’ posts. They were all grazing happily together, so they made the whole get-acquainted process quick and easy. Our little Appy mare has glued herself to him, and he lets her eat out of the same feed dish he does.
