My First Ride on Monarch’s Reign

My first ride on MY ex-race horse!

I still can’t believe how easy my first ride on Monarch was. I had read lots of other folks’ Thoroughbred Success Stories on the Bits & Bytes Farm Web site, as well as the article “Riding your OTTB for the first time.” I took special note of the line that said, “This is not your horse’s first ride, and it won’t be a rodeo,” but I think I still expected it to be at least a bit challenging. After all, the last time I was on a horse was more than two years ago, so I’m not exactly an expert rider these days!

Plus – and I almost hate to add this, because in retrospect it seems so silly – Monarch’s racing history gave me some reason to doubt my first ride would be a smooth one. After all, he had raced twice in his short career, and he’d lost his jockey BOTH TIMES! Read the rest of this entry »

Young Rachel Alexander Fans

Dr. Kenny win is an off-the-track Thoroughbred

Ex-race horse, Dr. Kenny Winn is now loved by Noah and Josh and their mom Ronni Berman.

Hi Elizabeth,

Hope you have been well. We’ve been following the new and improved NEWZ section and love it! Noah and Josh have seen the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. They asked and I gave in. The boys became huge fans of Rachel Alexandra and thought we should buy her after she’s finished racing. Oh sure, if we win the lottery maybe! Noah is quick to mention that his favorite horse is still Kwinn (Dr. Kenny Winn) though.

Kwinn has been doing so well! His training is coming along beautifully. The girl that rides him for me twice a week is going to use him in one of her dressage lessons so the trainer can get good look at him. He’s starting to get fit and muscle up with his work routine.
Take care!

Popular One – SOLD! September 2008

SOLD! Congratulations to Nick and Jacquie Alberti of Mt. Pleasant, SC!

OTTB Popular Ones racing days are over on to a new career

OTTB Popular Ones racing days are over - on to a new career

This was his Prospect Horse FOR SALE information:

Popular One aka “Moose” is a 16′1 hand, 2004, dark bay, Thoroughbred gelding. If you are looking for a horse with personality plus and tons of movement for dressage “Moose” is it. He is a very kind loving horse on the ground. He is quiet enough that the trainer’s ten-year-old son can brush him and pick his feet. He has no vices and is clean legged. “Moose” is a hoot to ride.

He is very happy to go out for his morning gallops and loves to train. He will play when you first get one him-he is not mean or aggressive he just feels so good he can’t stand himself. He is a fantastic mover with a hug trot. He has only ever had one exercise rider and one trainer. He is lightly raced and greatly loved by his barn. He is one of our contact’s most favorite horses to ride.

He is very light in the bridle and on your hand at all times – but he does feel good and can buck and play – not in a mean way, but just cause he feels so good. He has an “A” plus trot and a very comfortable canter. “Moose” must be sold to someone that will love him and further his career. Our contact is the exercise rider for this horse. She knows everything about him.

There are many photos of Popular One from his race on July 5 when he beat “Bubba” (Lynn’s Vision) in a photo finish. This was “Bubba’s” last race. Popular One wears the red colors. Click here to enjoy these track photos of Popluar One in “Bubba’s” album.

Lynn’s Vision Needs a Bigger Nose!

Lynn Vision's last race and he is ahead by a head.

Lynn's Vision nearing the finish line of his last race

Lynn’s Vision racing toward the finishline for the last time. He was the favorite at post time and broke from the starting gate in the lead. He led the entire race but as he rounds the final turn a worthy opponent, Popular One (currently available as a Prospect Horse) runs astride. It’s a photo finish! And Lynn’s Vision ends his racing career in second by a nose.

But for me this race is a special victory because now Lynn’s Vision is mine. And I’ve been waiting almost four months to be able to say that. Additionally, the trainer decides to sell Lynn’s Vision on a weekend when Elizabeth and Barry plan to be nearby. So they are able to personally attend his last race and photograph the entire event from tacking up, breaking from the gate, crossing the finishline and walking back to the barn. And during the race, Barry phoned and called the entire race, live, so I could listen and imagine being there. What a thrill!

"Bubba" is second out of the gate!

The following day, Elizabeth and Barry load Lynn’s Vision on the trailer and head to Georgia….and I’m waiting at the barn!

Elizabeth and Barry documented the entire race from tacking up to cooling out afterward. Please click here to see all the great photos from Bubba’s last race at River Downs.
